Punta Sur Cozumel: The Eco Park at the South Tip, Not a Beach Club

Punta Sur Cozumel is the island's southern ecological reserve: Celarain Lighthouse, a crocodile lagoon, a small Maya vestige, and a long stretch of leeward beach. It is a park with a gate, not a wristband club. Here is what the entrance actually covers, why Sunday is a problem, and when you should book a jeep instead of a taxi.

What Punta Sur actually is

The park is the Faro Celarain reserve at the far south end of Cozumel, past Palancar, not the hotel-zone strip. You pay a park admission, drive a long internal road, climb the lighthouse, ride a lagoon boat called El Tatich if it is running, and spend the rest of the time on the beach or the trail. What it is not: Mr Sanchos or Paradise Beach. Those are day-pass clubs with a buffet. Punta Sur is conservation land with a restaurant or two inside. Food, kayaks, and snorkel gear sit outside the gate ticket. The park's own English page lists the lighthouse, navigation museum, lagoon boat, hammocks, beach chairs, and trails as part of general entrance.

The beach named Cielo inside the park is not El Cielo

Inside the park there is a shore restaurant the operator lists as Playa del Cielo. That is a beach you reach by the park road. El Cielo Cozumel snorkeling is a boat-only starfish sandbar off the southwest reef. Same nickname, different place, different ticket. If the starfish photos are why you searched Punta Sur, you want a boat, not this gate.

Park ticket, jeep tour, or a beach club?

Most people are choosing among three days that only look similar in a search box.

What you wantBetter betWhy
Lighthouse, lagoon, wild south endPunta SurThat is the product. Celarain plus the reserve, not a swim-up bar.
The park without gambling on a long taxiA jeep or buggy that includes the gateAdmission plus the drive from the pier. Check the live listing for what lunch and snorkel actually cover.
The starfish sandbarEl Cielo by boatEl Cielo is offshore. The in-park beach with a similar name is not it.
Food, drinks, and a pool on a wristbandA beach clubBeach clubs are the buffet product. This park is not.
A Sunday port dayNot Punta SurThe official English schedule is Monday through Saturday. Treat Sunday as closed.

West-coast water inside the park is the sheltered side, so it dodges most sargassum. That is geography, not a daily promise. See sargassum in Cozumel.

How to book Punta Sur

Celarain lighthouse at the south end of Cozumel

Cruise days when you do not want the taxi math

Jeep and snorkel with Punta Sur

This is the usual cruiser product. The gate is a long posted-zone taxi from the south piers, so a jeep that includes admission is how most people actually get here. Check the live listing for today's price and whether lunch is in.

Shallow turquoise water over a sandbar in Cozumel

El Cielo, not the park beach with a similar name

If you wanted the starfish sandbar

Do not buy a park day for starfish photos. That is El Cielo, including the Fury catamaran if you want the big-boat version.

Lounge chairs and palapas on a sandy Caribbean beach

Wristband food and a pool

If you wanted a club, not a reserve

Punta Sur will not give you an open bar. Paradise Beach or Mr Sanchos is that shape of day.

What the park gate covers, and what it does not

Copied from the park's own general-entrance list, not from a brochure rewrite. We do not print the dollar figure because it moves.

ItemOn the gate ticket?Worth knowing
Celarain Lighthouse and navigation museumIncludedYou climb it. If stairs are a problem, the museum at the base still works.
El Tatich lagoon boat and crocodile towerIncludedWildlife is not a zoo show. Midday heat can empty the mangroves.
El Caracol Maya vestige, trails, beaches, hammocks, chairsIncludedThe ruin here is small. If you wanted San Gervasio, that is a different road. See Mayan ruins in Cozumel.
Bathrooms, parking, showers, life vestIncludedBring reef-safe sunscreen. Rangers do check.
Kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gearNot includedRent on site, or skip them.
Food, massages, tequila barNot includedIn-park clubs are a la carte.
Taxi from the cruise pierNot includedLong south-end zone fare. This is why the jeep exists.

Official English hours: Monday through Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. The Spanish park page lists a 4:00pm close. Confirm before you go, and do not build a Sunday call around it.

Getting there from the pier

From Puerta Maya or the International pier you are looking at a long run down the coast road, past the south hotels and Palancar, to the gate at the tip. Too far to walk. Taxis are posted zone fares, not a meter. The park's own site currently prints a hotel-zone Km 9 address. That is the wrong stretch. Aim for the south tip, Celarain, Punta Sur. A rental car is the stay-over move. A cruise passenger with six hours is usually better on a jeep that includes the gate, because the taxi both ways plus admission plus lunch is three transactions and a clock problem. Leave a full hour against all aboard after you are back at the terminal. Cruise port guide.

How we put this together

Hours and the included list come from the Cozumel Parks English Punta Sur page. The Spanish page disagrees on closing time, so we flag both instead of flattening it. We do not print admission in dollars even though the park lists one. Jeep products are the live the live listing inventory, labeled as such. We have not walked every trail on your date.

Punta Sur Cozumel: straight answers

Is Punta Sur Cozumel a beach club?

No. It is an ecological park with a gate. There are beaches and a couple of restaurants inside. There is no all-inclusive wristband.

Is Punta Sur open on Sunday?

Plan as if it is not. The official English schedule is Monday through Saturday. Confirm a holiday Saturday too.

Is the El Cielo inside Punta Sur the famous starfish sandbar?

No. The in-park beach is a shore stop. The starfish sandbar is a boat ride. See El Cielo Cozumel snorkeling.

How long do you need at Punta Sur?

Budget a half day including the drive. Lighthouse, lagoon boat, and beach time do not fit a two-hour taxi dash.

Can I go without a tour?

Yes if you have a car or will pay the long taxi. Bring cash for extras. A jeep that includes the gate is the simpler cruise-day version.

Punta Sur or Chankanaab?

Chankanaab is the shore-reef park closer to the piers. Punta Sur is the wild south: lighthouse, lagoon, more driving. If you wanted coral at a ladder, start with Chankanaab.

Book the park if you want the lighthouse. Book a club if you want a wristband.

Punta Sur Cozumel is the south-tip reserve. Confirm it is not Sunday, do not mix up the two Cielos, and use a jeep if the taxi math looks ugly.
